MADISON, Wis. — Lawmakers and cryptocurrency advocates gathered at the Wisconsin Capitol on Wednesday to push for legislation that would change how the state treats cryptocurrency staking, arguing that outdated laws are preventing residents from accessing rewards they’ve already earned.

Assembly Bill 892 aims to bring Wisconsin in line with 46 other states that already allow cryptocurrency staking services. Supporters say Wisconsin’s current laws were written before cryptocurrency technology existed, creating barriers for residents who want to participate in staking activities.

“Proof of stake networks are being used today in states that passed similar reforms have not reversed course and have not seen widespread harm, only clearer rules and stronger participation,” said Rep. Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee). “AB 892 clarifies that staking is not a security, giving Wisconsinites immediate safe and responsible access to millions in potential rewards.”

The bill would align Wisconsin with other states while still allowing regulators to pursue fraud and abuse cases.

The legislation now moves to the Assembly Committee on Science, Technology and AI for a hearing. Bill sponsors express optimism that the measure can pass the Assembly before the legislative session ends, though its prospects in the Senate and with the governor remain uncertain.
