The Golden State Warriors could budge in on a league-altering deal sending Anthony Davis to the Hawks to get Klay Thompson amid trade rumors.

The Golden State Warriors appear to be ready to make a move at the upcoming NBA trade deadline, and all signs point to the franchise cutting ties with Jonathan Kuminga after a tumultuous past year in the Bay Area.

At the same time, rumors have swirled around a potential return to the Warriors for Klay Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks, as his year-and-a-half tenure in Texas hasn’t necessarily gone as planned.

While the Mavericks also expect to make big moves at the trade deadline, Golden State could be involved in the potential trade that would send Anthony Davis to the Atlanta Hawks, a move that, as time goes on, appears more and more likely, while the Dubs get back their four-time champion shooter.

Anthony Davis could soon be heading East, since he’s been heavily touted as the Hawks’ prime trade target. If it were to go down, expect a big shake-up in the league involving upto 5 teams and several stars.

Writing for ClutchPoints.com, Brett Siegel outlined a league-altering five-team deal that would send Kuminga out for Thompson, place Davis in Atlanta, move Trae Young to the Sacramento Kings, and see Dallas get a boatload of new talent to pair around rookie sensation Cooper Flagg

Blockbuster Trade Idea That Would Shake Up The NBA

Highlighted below is the trade pitch offered up by Siegel, an NBA insider, who, with his insights on recent trade rumors, believes a deal like this is certainly possible before the February 5th trade deadline.

Hawks receive: F/C Anthony Davis, G/F Zach LaVine, G D’Angelo Russell

Mavericks receive: F/C Domantas Sabonis, F Zaccharie Risacher, G Luke Kennard, CLE 2026 1st-round pick (via ATL swap), ATL/UTA/CLE 2028 1st-round swap (More favorable of ATL and less favorable of CLE/UTA), BOS 2026 2nd-round pick (via ATL)

Kings receive: G Trae Young, F Jonathan Kuminga, F/C Kristaps Porzingis

Warriors receive: C Nic Claxton, G/F Klay Thompson, G Keon Ellis, SAC 2026 2nd round-pick (via SAC)

Brooklyn Nets receive: G/F Moses Moody, G Buddy Hield, C Trayce Jackson-Davis, GSW 2027 1st-round pick (top-8 protected, via GSW; if not conveyed, becomes 2028 1st-round pick unprotected)

The five-team mega deal would be spotlighted by the Hawks trading for Davis, but at the same time, would create a storybook ending for the Warriors, as they would get back Thompson, as well as a few other pieces that could potentially put them in a better spot to make the playoffs.

Specifically with Claxton, as with the obviously aging Draymond Green and Al Horford, Golden State could desperately use another rebounding and rim-protecting big. It would require them to give up a decent amount of assets, but it could be enough to reinvigorate the Bay Area team in Stephen Curry‘s final few seasons in the league.

Why The Warriors Make This Trade

As mentioned, there are two main reasons why the Warriors would make a deal like this: to cut ties with Kuminga and bring back Thompson, a player crucial to their championship runs in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

Additionally, in this trade, the Kings would get the player they’ve been interested in for a while, the 23-year-old Kuminga.

“The messaging has been pretty consistent, which is, yes, they do still have interest.”
@sam_amick tells @JasonRoss1140 the Sacramento Kings remain interested in Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, but that doesn’t mean a deal is going to happen:

“It is no secret to anyone in the NBA that Kuminga will be traded before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, and the Kings have never wavered from their interest in him since the Golden State Warriors turned down their trade requests in the offseason,” Siegel wrote. “Golden State wouldn’t trade Kuminga only for Thompson and Ellis, but they would almost certainly be open to the idea of sending the young forward to Sacramento if they could also get Nic Claxton from the Brooklyn Nets.”

Regardless of the specifics of a mock trade like this, the Warriors need to make wholesale changes, and with the Mavericks seemingly ready to move on from Thompson and head coach Steve Kerr’s interest in a reunion, it isn’t the wildest trade idea that’s been floated out.

Steve Kerr: “I’ll never get used to seeing Klay (Thompson) on the other side. I miss Klay. Wish he was still here.”

Like Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Milwaukee Bucks, though clearly not as serious an issue, Golden State should do what it can to keep the franchise star, Curry, happy. The Kuminga experiment hasn’t worked, and while they’ll likely be a long shot for a title anyway, bringing back Thompson and two young players could give them a better shot at one more playoff run.
