Rundown

Sandy Alcantara‘s 2025 was one to forget. The 2022 NL Cy Young missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John, and struggled in his returning season in 2025. Alcantara registered an ERA above four for the first time in his career, while also seeing his strikeouts per nine total dip below eight for a consecutive season.

The month to month wasn’t great either. He registered ERAs of 8.31 and 8.64 in the first two months of the seasons, then 4.34 and 4.66 the next two. In that time, Alcantara also served up 13 homers and 77 earned runs in 109 innings.

The underlying metrics also showed struggled for Alcantara. He was in the 17th percentile in Whiff%, 57th percentile in Chase%, 55th percentile for BB%, 15% in Hardhit%. Simply put, batters weren’t fooled by his stuff, and when they hit the ball, it was hit hard.

That notion was proved correct by the exit velocities by batters. Alcantara gave up an average exit velocity of 90.7 miles per hour last season, and was in the bottom one percent of max exit velo allowed. (117.9 mph).

Still, despite struggling, Alcantara took the ball every day. He made 31 starts during the regular season, registering 174 2/3 innings in 2025. Alcantara also saw better results in the final two months of the season, putting up ERAs of 3.69 and 3.71. The longball during that time was still a struggle, as he allowed nine in 65 2/3 innings.

Package

Trading for Alcantara would still cost a lot. The Marlins didn’t move him at the deadline, and have held on to him as of today due to the deals for him being meager. If the Mets were to trade for him, expect a package that would resemble the Alcantara of three years ago.

Mets receive:
Sandy Alcantara SP
Anthony Bender RP

Marlins receive:
Brandon Sproat SP
Brett Baty 3B
Luisangel Acuña 2B

Recommendation

The Mets need staring pitching help, and at the very least, reliable innings. Alcantara, when healthy, logs his 180-200 innings pitched, and when at the top of his game, is one of the best pitchers in baseball.

The Mets need an arm like that to compete with the top teams in the National League. Plus, I’m willing to buy the last two months of Alcantara and bet that he returns to a reliable, mid-three ERA pitcher that can take the ball in a Game One of the playoffs.
