See South Orangetown Middle School’s finance, money management class
Seventh-graders at South Orangetown Middle School learn money management at the school’s first Finance and Careers class in Blauvelt, NY. Dec. 11, 2025.
Seventh-graders at South Orangetown Middle School in Blauvelt are getting a head start at learning about money management at the school’s first Finance and Careers class.
According to business teacher Lindsay Richmond, the class exposes students to financial literacy and business concepts before they graduate middle school.
“In this course, they are introduced to career exploration and learning about the basics of a paycheck so that when they do get their first paycheck, they have a little bit of an understanding of what is involved and how to make sure that their paychecks are accurate,” Richmond said.
It’s the first year of the business program at the middle school.
“The state has required within the next couple of years that schools have a graduation requirement at the high school for financial literacy and that students are exposed to these concepts at the middle school,” Richmond said.
The goal of the program is to give students basic knowledge in finance, which, according to Richmond, “many students, many adults, wish they had when they were in these grades.”
A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. Here, our photographers find what makes our school days anything but ordinary, the people and programs and events that make a difference, school day in and school day out.
