Arizona Diamondbacks star second baseman Ketel Marte’s name has been heavily mentioned in trade rumors this offseason, but the San Francisco Giants may have trouble throwing their hat into those discussions.
While the Giants have been reported to be in the mix for starting pitching options, such as free-agent ace Framber Valdez and veteran free-agent Max Scherzer, they have also been linked to second base options as San Francisco evaluates upgrades across the board.
If the Giants are to attempt a trade for Marte, they will have to navigate the 32-year-old’s no-trade list that includes five teams, with San Francisco being one of the unpreferred destinations.
According to The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal, the San Francisco Giants are among those teams listed on Marte’s no-trade list, joining the Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals.
Marte has a five-team no-trade list – the Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Cardinals, according to people briefed on his contract. He will gain full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years of major-league service, five consecutive with the same team, on the 10th day of the 2026 season.

Marte, a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner with Arizona, has five seasons and $91 million guaranteed remaining on his current contract that includes an $11.5 million player option for 2031.
The 2023 NLCS MVP batted .283 with 28 home runs and 72 RBI during the 2025 season. Marte posted an OPS above .840 for the fourth time in five seasons, finishing with a .893 mark in 2025 (fourth-best in the National League).
It may take some time for Marte’s trade market to fully develop, but the San Francisco Giants may have to look elsewhere if they want to upgrade the second base position.

The San Francisco Giants were widely reported to be out on high-priced free agent arms, but shortly following a report that disputed that notion, they are also active in the trade market for a top-shelf ace.
Already linked to free agent left-hander Framber Valdez, the Giants are also said to be interested in acquiring Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, who could be moved this offseason before entering free agency next winter.
According to The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal, San Francisco is among several teams that are “in” on discussions involving the two-time All-Star.
As Milwaukee did with 2021 Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes in 2023, the Brewers appear to be kicking the tires on moving Peralta in an effort to stock up on young players and assets rather than fork out a sizable contract.
Peralta, 29, posted a 17-6 record and 2.70 ERA while striking out 204 batters over a career-high 176.2 innings. The right-hander led the National League with 17 wins en route to finishing fifth in the NL Cy Young race.
It makes sense that the San Francisco Giants are interested in Peralta, a player they could acquire without breaking the bank in the short term.
