The city of Montpelier announced on Friday that Sarah LaCroix will be stepping down from her position as the city’s finance director to accept a position with Sullivan Powers & Company.
“Sarah is an essential member of our leadership team and has seen the city through challenging times,” stated Acting City Manager Kelly Murphy.
During her time with the city, LaCroix’s work went well beyond managing numbers. She built trust across departments, supported informed decision-making by the city council, and translated complex financial issues into clear, accessible information for the community. As the coordinator for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance following the 2023 and 2024 floods, LaCroix played a key role in securing $5.15 million in disaster recovery assistance and successfully obtained a $2.13 million Municipal Climate Recovery Fund (MCRF) loan from the Vermont Bond Bank at a low interest rate, providing critical financial support for the city’s recovery.
In a personal statement, LaCroix said: “It has been an honor to serve the city of Montpelier and to contribute to work I believe in deeply. My time here has strengthened my passion for this community, and I am grateful to have been part of a strong leadership team so committed to Montpelier’s future. I will greatly miss the collaboration, the relationships, and the unwavering support of my fantastic Finance staff, whose talent and dedication give me full confidence that the city’s finances remain in exceptionally capable hands. While the months ahead may bring challenges, the foundation is strong because of them. I am excited for my next chapter, and I will always carry immense pride in what we accomplished together.”
“We are grateful for her dedication to public service and for the significant contributions she made to the city. While we will miss her leadership, we wish her the very best in her next chapter and are confident that the foundation she helped build will continue to serve Montpelier well into the future,” Murphy continued.
LaCroix’s last day in office will be Dec. 19. In the coming days, the city will share interim plans to ensure the seamless continuation of the budget process and keep finance functions running smoothly.
