Cryptocurrency 101 for Social Workers: Understanding Digital Money in Real-World Practice

Cryptocurrency is no longer a fringe topic—it’s becoming part of everyday life for many clients, whether through income, scams, online purchases, remittances, or financial stress. This workshop offers social workers a clear, jargon-free introduction to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, highlighting what’s most relevant to professional practice.

Participants will gain a foundational understanding of how cryptocurrency works, key terminology, common myths, and the ways clients may encounter crypto—both beneficial and harmful. The session also explores ethical and practical implications for social work, with a focus on client education and identifying red flags for fraud, exploitation, and financial vulnerability.

By the end of the workshop, social workers will be better equipped to have informed, confident conversations about digital assets and to support clients engaging with emerging financial systems.
