LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow and AARP Nebraska volunteers will highlight a new city ordinance aimed at protecting older adults from cryptocurrency scams on Tuesday morning.
The ordinance, Lincoln Municipal Code Chapter 9.70, was approved by the Lincoln City Council on Nov. 17 and signed into law by Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird on Nov. 24.
According to LPD, crypto scams have increased from 49 cases in 2021 to more than 100 in 2025, with Lincolnites losing more than $11 million to scammers.
The ordinance is designed to reduce fraud by increasing awareness and safeguards around cryptocurrency transactions, which scammers often use to target older adults.
As part of an education campaign, AARP Nebraska volunteers will distribute informational packets and warning stickers to businesses that operate cryptocurrency ATMs. The materials are intended to help customers recognize common scam tactics and know when to stop a transaction.
