Hawks make odd Trae Young-Anthony Davis trade decision

The Atlanta Hawks are interested in a trade for Anthony Davis.

But they don’t want to include Trae Young?

That’s what NBA insider Marc Stein reported this weekend, and somehow, it doesn’t add up.

First, this is what Stein wrote:

“The Hawks are a real-deal suitor for Davis. Just how far, though, are they willing to go in terms of a Davis offer? Haynes also reported that Trae Young would not be included in such a swap, but that creates potential financial obstacles for a franchise not exactly known for lavish spending. Davis is owed $58.5 million next season and is likewise known to be eager to secure an extension in August when he becomes eligible for one … whether that’s with the Mavericks or a team that acquires him.”

Now the oddness.

Why wouldn’t they include Young?

For one, Young makes the money add up so much easier.

For another, Young hasn’t proved he can actually lead the Hawks to wins. He puts up numbers, but since his return from injury, the Hawks have gotten worse.

Atlanta discovered when Young was out that Jalen Johnson can be their team leader.

To put it simply: Do the Hawks still need Young?

It’s not obvious the Mavericks would want Young. But he doesn’t seem like a guy you make untouchable at this point, either.

Maybe that’ll change as trade season heats up. It certainly seems like the Hawks ought to reconsider this thinking.
