The parent company of Giant plans to close five fulfillment centers in Pennsylvania, including one in the Lehigh Valley.

Ahold Delhaize USA said this month that it is closing centralized fulfillment centers as part of a reorganization of its home delivery system. That includes a location in Coopersburg.

Other locations include Philadelphia, Lancaster, Willow Grove and North Coventry Township, Chester County.

Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications were issued for the Philadelphia and Lancaster locations, which will affect more than 200 workers. No WARN notices were issued for the remaining locations.

Ashley Flower, public relations manager for Giant, said the Coopersburg facility has 106 employees and they are being offered positions elsewhere in the organization.

“We’ve worked carefully to identify opportunities similar to their current role or new roles they are qualified for and interested in,” Flower told The Morning Call.

The fulfillment centers are expected to be closed by April 2026.

There is a Giant supermarket in Upper Saucon Township, at Fairmont Street and Route 309, just outside of Coopersburg. Giant has a large presence in the Lehigh Valley, with 14 locations, including a new store at South Mall in Salisbury Township.

In a statement, Giant said Giant Direct orders in the future will be picked by store employees and delivered by a third-party provider, such as Instacart or DoorDash.

“We’ve learned over the past few years that there isn’t a one size fits all approach to our ecommerce business, particularly our fulfillment model,” the company said. “With customers expecting faster delivery, we need to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible to meet their ever-changing needs.”

Giant said customers can expect faster delivery times along with an expanded assortment and in-store pricing.
