Dorchester County reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and fiscal accountability as the County Council recognized staff recently for earning two major financial reporting honors from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).
The county received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. It also earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2026 budget book. Dorchester County was one of 24 local government organizations in South Carolina to receive the award in Fiscal Year 2024.
“Dorchester County is committed to financial stewardship and budget transparency,” said Dorchester County Council Chair David Chinnis. “Residents and business owners are encouraged to view the financial reports on the County’s website for more information.”
State law requires counties to publish financial statements that comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and be audited under Generally Accepted Auditing Standards. To meet those requirements, Dorchester County issues a competitive request for proposals to select an independent external auditor. Mauldin & Jenkins was contracted to conduct the audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.
The county annually publishes its comprehensive financial report, which is available on its website. The audit for Fiscal Year 2025 is expected to be completed this month and posted by February 1, 2026. Monthly accounts payable statements, processed by the county’s Business Services Division, are also publicly available online.
Dorchester County also participates in the South Carolina Comptroller General’s Spending Transparency Website, which provides public access to expenditure information for counties and municipalities across the state.
