Two brilliant hockey games, four stories on Pittsburgh Hockey Now, including some hard grades on the forwards and the delayed PHN+ Q&A that got into trades and what will happen with the crowded goalie situation. Elsewhere in the Daily, Vincent Trocheck is popping up in the NHL trade rumors, Russia will probably miss international events through 2028, and Sportsnet got a full examination of Sidney Crosby’s evolution.
The skill on display for Team Canada and the USA was unbelievable. Also, my opinion of the gold medal game’s eventual result (easily Team Canada) was reinforced. Just so fast and talented.
I did some PHN+ content Thursday.
I got a message from the big guns just before publishing that subscribers should have seen only one ad when logged in. So, how did it go?
Believe me, I’ve received all of your emails and seen all of the comments. It looks like we finally fixed it, yes?
I’m off to Wilkes-Barre tonight for a pair of weekend games. Unfortunately, I can’t work the room as I do in Pittsburgh because WBS’s locker room is closed (you have to walk through the training area to get into the room, and coaches just don’t want that). Still, I expect a few real conversations with a couple of guys and as in-depth scouting as possible.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Report cards are in! The entire group of forwards, including a couple no longer with the big club, got their grades. There was one F, a handful of A grades, and some Bs. At the Olympic break, here’s how we graded the Penguins forwards.
PHN+: I think we’re back! The PHN+ Q&A had some deep questions, from which goalie is gone, to which free agents the Penguins should bring back, and a heady comparison for coach Dan Muse. I had some fun writing this one–the Penguins Q&A.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NHLtraderumors.me: I think Chris Johnston’s opinion on this one is spot on–there are a couple of Central Division teams sniffing around Vincent Trochek, but as the NHL trade talk heats up, Johnston thinks the Minnesota Wild is the team that snags him.
You probably didn’t catch the little joke earlier this week. I cannot recall who tweeted about it, but as NHL players arrived in Milan, there was a lot of picture-taking and backslapping. As the group of Wild players wanted to take a picture of themselves together, Trocheck acted like he was going to jump into the picture, too. Everyone laughed. Yeah…he knows.
Sportsnet: I thought you might like a good look at the full-length and in-depth feature story on Sidney Crosby. From him making pasta for the Penguins youngsters staying in the hotel during their temporary NHL stint, to becoming Captain Canada. The national look at Crosby.
TSN: Russia will remain barred from international competition and NHL events until they stop trying to level Ukraine. However, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman wouldn’t talk about the details of establishing a bi-annual World Cup.
Philly Hockey Now: Where are the black Flyers jerseys? Some new jerseys are coming next season, and Will James may have found the Flyers’ retro sweater.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Wow, did Jack Hughes have a game. He fed Brock Nelson like an Italian grandmother on Sunday afternoon. Nelson also had a game. Here’s the New Jersey reaction to seeing that version of the Devils superstar again.
The Athletic ($): USA was skill and physicality as they whooped Latvia. Penguins goalie Arturs Silovs relieved Elvis Merzlikins in the third period and had to make some dandy saves to keep the game respectable. But the USA, wow.
TSN: Team Canada was absolutely brilliant in destroying Czechia. It was so far above everyone else. Perhaps the best team in the world since the 1987 Canada Cup. Even Canadian pundits were impressed.
Boston Hockey Now: Yuck! Absolute yuck. The brown jersey is making a comeback for the Boston Bruins.
