CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — Clovis Unified is urging college-bound seniors to file their application for student aid ahead of the upcoming deadline.
In just a few short months, seniors will be crossing the stage in their caps and gowns.
So, in preparation, counselors like Andie Jones are doing financial aid intervention.
They’re working with all seniors, even those who don’t plan to continue their education.
“They may think that they maybe they didn’t want to go to college now, but that could change in nine months and so just in case they want to change their mind, we want to make sure everybody has a plan and they’ve submitted the application,” Jones said.
In addition to need-based aid, several non-need based and merit scholarships, grants and work study programs require students to complete the applications.
Jones says it’s a relatively easy process for students to do.
“Fifty-five minutes, which is what we have in a single class period, is actually more than enough time for them to create their account, start and submit their own application and then parents just have to complete their part,” Jones said.
Jones says students should submit an application even if they think their parents make too much money to qualify for aid.
“You never know what you’re going to qualify for until you submit your application and get your results back,” Jones said.
The district is hosting multiple financial aid sessions at the high schools and at Clovis Community College in February.
- Feb. 2, 5:30 p.m., Clovis High library;
- Feb. 3, 5:30 p.m., Clovis North library;
- Feb. 10, 6 p.m., Clovis East Library Lecture Hall;
- Feb. 17, 5:30 p.m., Buchanan library;
- Feb, 23, 5:30 p.m. Clovis West Lecture Hall; and
- Feb. 28, 10 a.m., Clovis Community College AC-1.
Families are welcome to attend any session, regardless of their student’s school site.
“If you can make it to a session, if you need help, really do your best to get out there and get it submitted before March 2,” Jones said. “It’s a good opportunity, really, to get free money.”
No registration is required to attend one of the sessions.
Jones says parents may want to bring their tax information because sometimes it is needed.
