PHOENIX — St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who badly wanted to be traded to a contender for the past 15 months, waived his no-trade clause Tuesday and accepted a trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitching prospect Jack Martinez.

The Cardinals, who are in a full rebuild and nearly traded Arenado to the Houston Astros last winter until Arenado vetoed the deal, also sent along $31 million of the remaining $42 million over two years Arenado’s contract.

Arenado, who has a home in the Los Angeles area, told USA TODAY Sports in a text message that he is thrilled to be joining the D-backs. He fills the vacancy left by Eugenio Suarez, who was traded last summer to the Seattle Mariners.

Arenado, 34, is a 10-time Gold Glove winner and eight-time All-Star, who has struggled the past two years. He missed six weeks of last season with a right shoulder strain, and hit just .237 with 12 homers, his lowest total since 2013.

He now joins a D-backs team that was in the World Series in 2023, but missed the postseason the past two years.
