Alexis learned about affordable housing options through her sister while planning a move from Northwest Iowa to Waukee. The move was important to her because it allowed her and her sister to live closer together and raise their families nearby.
During the transition, Alexis and her husband faced an unexpected challenge when her husband lost his job. With uncertainty around employment, they needed a housing option that was affordable, located in a safe community, and close to job opportunities.
Through the housing tax credit program, Alexis and her family were able to move into Waukee Family Townhomes. The stability of affordable housing allowed Alexis to focus on finding work, and she soon secured a position as a school counselor within the Waukee Community School District. Living and working in the same community has allowed Alexis to support both her own family and the families she serves. She values being part of a community where she can contribute professionally while staying close to home.
