Phillies predicted to cut ties with $100M All-Star in trade with NL club

The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the better teams in the league over the last few seasons, but they haven’t been good enough to win a World Series. As a result, they could look to make some big moves this offseason.

Considering they have a few big free agents on the market, the Phillies could clear some cap space by trading their big contracts. The top name who could be on the market is veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos. The Phillies would be much better off if they cut ties with him to free up the salary.

Eric Treuden of Just Baseball recently predicted the Phillies would trade Castellanos to the lowly Colorado Rockies this offseason.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos

“The Rockies are by no means going to be chasing victories in 2026, but they’ve got to at least field a team made up of real human beings,” Treuden wrote. “If they’re able to pull off a deal with the Phillies where they can land a prospect alongside Castellanos in exchange for taking on his whole 2026 salary, things start to make a bit more sense.

“In the past, the Rockies have been a team that’s been willing to sweeten deals to get overpaid players off their roster (see: Nolan Arenado). This time around, we’d see the fortunes turn the other way for them.”

The Phillies need to do anything they can to get out of Castellanos’ contract. They need to save money to re-sign Kyle Schwarber and JT Realmuto this winter.

The Rockies aren’t in a position to win right now, but they could take on Castellanos’ contract in exchange for a handful of prospects from the Phillies. The Rockies would be much better off if they could add future talent in any way possible.
