Lakers Won’t Trade for Help in One Key Area This Season

The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a strong start in the 2025-26 season, currently placing third in the Western Conference with a 16-6 record, through they could still strengthen themselves with a couple additions if they feel the need to.

According to Lakers insider Jovan Buha, though, the Lakers don’t feel like acquiring a point guard would be on their to-do list during the season.

“To my knowledge, no,” Buha said. “You have enough ball handling with Luka, Austin and LeBron. … I think that’s one of the last areas the Lakers really need.”

Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been potentially the best backcourt in the league through the first quarter of the season, so it makes plenty of sense why the Lakers wouldn’t be gunning for an upgrade among their guards.

LeBron James returned to the team in November after missing a solid chunk of games with sciatica to start the season, and has taken on a role as a facilitator in the Lakers’ offense. He is averaging 14.0 points per game to go witn 7.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

Doncic is off to an electric start of the season, posting a league-leading 35.3 points per game in 2025-26. He is also averaging 8.9 rebounds and 8.9 assists this season and is a clear candidate for the MVP award this season.

Reaves has been equally impressive, taking another step up after a monstrous third season in the league. He’s averaging 29.3 points per game on 52.5 percent shooting, and is on track to make his first All-Star appearance this season.

In addition to Doncic and Reaves, the Lakers have Gabe Vincent and offseason addition Marcus Smart coming off the bench to supplement their depth in the backcourt.

What Should the Lakers Look for in a Trade Instead?

The Lakers don’t have much to send out as far as trades go, with the moves they made last season for Doncic and Dorian Finney-Smith leaving them with very few future picks.

Their most likely option to trade, if they’re to make one at all, is to ship out forward Rui Hachimura in an attempt to improve on the defensive side of the ball.
