Yankees trade idea swaps 2 prospects for $116M All-Star slugger

The New York Yankees have publicly stated that Anthony Volpe will be their shortstop next season, but upgrading from him would certainly help their chances of getting back to the World Series.

Volpe has not produced offensively in any season of his career, but his defense had kept him inthe lineup. Last season he led the league in errors, albiet playing through a shoulder injury. The Arzona Diamondbacks are reportedly listening to offers on Ketel Marte and The Athletic’s Jim Bowden proposed this blockbuster trade to get him to the Bronx:

  • Yankees receive: 2B Ketel Marte
  • Diamondbacks receive: RHP Elmer Rodriguez (Yankees No. 3 prospect) and SS Roderick Arias (Yankees No. 20 prospect)

Marte signed a six-year, $116 million extension before the season. He has been an All-Star in each of the last two seasons. He has also received MVP votes and won Silver Slugger Awards in both seasons. He would be a massive addition for the Yankees.

Marte has six more seasons of club control and will make just $28 million over the next two seasons. He could be the everyday second baseman, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to go back to third base. Meanwhile, the Yankees would at least have two proven infields bracketing Volpe.

Volpe could bounce back after offseason surgery. However, his offensive numbers even before his injury were not great. If his defense cannot get back on track, the Yankees have very little reason to stick with him.
