Scam alerts issued as cryptocurrency ATM fraud spreads in southern Nevada, officials warn

A growing scam involving cryptocurrency ATMs, particularly Bitcoin, is spreading nationwide, including in Southern Nevada.

The Nevada Secretary of State’s office has issued a warning on its website about the increase in these scams.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported losses exceeding $110 million to these scams in 2023, with most of the affected ATMs located in Las Vegas.

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar highlighted some red flags to watch for.

He also noted that states like California, Arizona, and New York have enacted legislation to address the issue, adding, “to serve our state.”
