The move is a signal the Mavericks are moving on from the trade that sent superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package headlined by Davis last year.
Former general manager Nico Harrison, who was fired by Dallas in November, engineered the middle-of-the-night deal that angered fans. Trade speculation had surrounded Davis ever since Harrison was let go following a slow start to the season.
Davis has been out of the lineup since mid-January after suffering a torn ligament in his left hand. The 10-time All-Star won’t need surgery on the injury, and still has a few weeks remaining on the original four-to-six week timeline from when he was first hurt.
The Wizards have made a stark shift recently from their rebuild after losing 67 and 64 games the past two seasons. Washington traded for Trae Young last month and now adds Davis to a group of young players that includes big man Alex Sarr, the No. 2 pick in 2024.
Once fully healthy, Davis and Young will be the stars on a team that features young big man Alex Sarr, young talent like Kyshawn George, Bub Carrington and Bilal Coubialy and standout rookie Tre Johnson.
Davis appeared in just 31 of a possible 84 games over two partial seasons with the Mavericks, including the two play-in tournament games he played last season.
Dallas is building around star rookie Cooper Flagg with this move, clearing up more time in the frontcourt for him. All of the players Dallas acquired will be free agents this summer as it decides what to do about the return of Kyrie Irving.
Flagg, who is averaging 20.1 ppg, doesn’t turn 20 until next season. The Mavericks lost all three games on Flagg’s current 30-plus run and are on a five-game skid, a season worst.
Dallas is 12th in the West at 19-31, making it increasingly unlikely that guard Kyrie Irving will play this season. The nine-time All-Star tore the ACL in his left knee last March.
Russell has a player option for next season, while Hardy is under contract until 2026-27 (he has a team option for 2027-28). Exum will be a free agent this summer.
